Take the 10.35am Clare Island Ferry (O’Grady’s BLUE ferry) from Roonagh Pier, across the majesty of Clew Bay, to Clare Island. Carl O’Grady, an island native and founder of Clare Island Whiskey, will meet the group at the pier on the island and bring them to Grace O’Malley’s castle, an easy 1-minute walk from the pier.
Carl will introduce the group to the story of the famous Pirate Queen, ancient Irish myth stories, the Irish clan system, the Normans, the Tudors, the Great Famine, local traditions of the sea and current life and times on Clare Island. This is an interactive experience where guests are invited to introduce their ancestry and discover how we are all connected.
Next the group will have a coffee break and a treat with Alice at the Clare Island Oven beside the Castle before taking Bridget’s taxi 2.5km back to 12th century Cistercian Abbey and graveyard. Here stories of the Great War, visit the burial place of Grace O’Malley, enjoy the 13th century ceiling paintings that hold a secret code yet to be deciphered.
From here, Bridget’s taxi back to Clare Island Whiskey Cafe / Shop for lunch and enjoy the history of the island and brand brough to life on the walls of the shop / cafe. Guest have the option to add on a Clare Island Sea Aged Single Malt tasting experience before ferry departure at 4.15pm.
